Freedom + Juneteenth 2024: A night of Jubilation

For Juneteenth this year, we proudly partnered with Pease Park Conservancy and Art is Cool to produce an incredible event, Freedom + Juneteenth. This celebration not only honored the significance of Juneteenth but also served a deeper purpose. The area where Pease Park is now centered was once owned by a former slaveholder. Today, Pease Park Conservancy is committed to transforming the park into a space that is welcoming and accessible to all, especially the Black community. Through events like these, the Conservancy is working to refresh the narrative and understanding of the park, ensuring it is a place where everyone feels a sense of belonging.

The event featured a diverse array of activities, from a thought-provoking panel discussion on “Creating Community in Your Own Backyard” to a vibrant vendors market that showcased the exceptional products and services of Black-owned businesses. Attendees enjoyed dynamic DJ performances, a captivating live art exhibition, a powerful dance performance by Ballet Afrique, and delicious offerings from Black-owned food vendors. We also hosted two engaging workshops—Sip & Paint and a Poetry Workshop—that added to the enriching experience.

Attendees raved about their experience, expressing not only their enjoyment but also their eagerness to return to the park in the future. Freedom + Juneteenth was a beautiful tribute to Black culture, shining a spotlight on the richness of our heritage and creating meaningful economic opportunities for the Black community. It was a significant step toward reimagining Pease Park as a place of inclusivity and celebration for all.
